Secretory carcinoma is a rare, low-grade type of breast cancer with a favorable prognosis. Microscopically it can show solid, microcystic, and tubular patterns of growth. The tumour cells have abundant pink cytoplasm and produce an intracellular and extracellular secretory material that stains positive with PAS or Alcian blue. By immunohistochemistry, the tumour cells are positive for EMA, α-lactoalbumin, S100 and are negative for ER, PR, HER2, and p63. Secretory carcinoma consistently harbors a balanced translocation t(12:15) creating an ETV6-NTRK3 gene fusion. An analogous tumour, also called secretory carcinoma, arises in the salivary glands.
